UPS to appeal $247 million verdict in NY cigarette case
Case involves shipments of illegal, untaxed goods.
United Parcel Service said it will appeal a federal judge’s ruling that it pay nearly $247 million in damages and penalties for illegally shipping untaxed cigarettes in New York.
“UPS is extremely disappointed in the court’s ruling and imposed penalties and we will vigorously appeal the decision,” the company said in a statement after the verdict.
The company added it believed the monetary award was excessive, particularly given the shipments at issue generated around $1 million in revenue.

House panel OKs steps to further ease military transition to trucking
Both bills are expansions of measures included in FAST Act.
The House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee approved two measures on May 24 to further ease the transition of military personnel seeking commercial driver’s licenses.
Both are expansions of measures initially included in the 2015 FAST Act.
Introduced by Rep. Rob Woodall (R-GA), HR 2547 will make more medical professionals at medical facilities operated by the Veteran Affairs (VA) eligible to conduct physicals for truck drivers.
